living together or apart

This little booklet from the Legal Services Society is one that we constantly recommend to couples who are contemplating moving forward with their separate and independent lives.

It is a simple but excellent primer for understanding your rights. After all, it is the fear of the unknown that is the biggest obstacle at this point. We also wrote an accompanying article called “Common Law Relationships, Marriage, Separation, and Divorce.”

The booklet explains the basics of family law in BC and it includes:

  • information about living common-law or being married,
  • the process for separation and divorce,
  • how to work out custody, support, and access issues if there are children involved, and
  • how to sort out money matters.

Remember that divorce is a transition, not a way of life.
