COVID-19 and Virtual Family Mediation in BC

COVID-19 has made us all think twice about how we interact with the rest of the world. Social distancing will continue to be practised long after the virus is beaten.

Virtual divorce mediation has been a big part of our services for many years. Although we have an office in West Kelowna, we have helped couples negotiate their separation plans from as far away as Montreal, Mexico City and Golden, BC. We have never met many of these couples.

It is a cost-effective way to settle separation and divorce issues when couples are far from one another geographically, or if they are far from their chosen mediator.

Mediating from a distance

As indicated above, Kelowna Divorce has been doing it for years and the first couple that we helped were located in West Kelowna and Mexico City. The husband, Dwight, has the following to say about it:

“This divorce for sure was very complicated because I was living in Mexico and my ex was living in Canada. I had spent upwards of $40,000 on a Kelowna lawyer and I didn’t get anywhere! Kristy and Wes were able to let my ex-wife and I vent our frustrations and anger and help us to see that there was hope and that life could still be great at the end of this process. They went far and above my expectations and they are still in contact with us to make sure we’re ok.”

Kelowna Divorce’s definition of Virtual Mediation is using technology to assist couples through the painful process of separation and divorce while one or more of the clients are not in the same room as our mediator. We use whatever technology is available and which our clients are comfortable using. It includes email, texting, Skype, Hangouts, Zoom, Facebook, cell phones and land lines. The choice is left up to our clients.

Mediate BC has produced a report called “Mediating from a Distance:  Suggested Practice Guidelines for Family Mediators.” In fact, we have incorporated these guidelines into our own practice.

If you and your spouse are in a remote area or you are physically miles apart from one another and you find yourself on the brink of separation and divorce, or if all else has failed, give us a call at 250.707.0928 to request a consultation. That first critical hour is $150 but it is well worth your time.
