The legal costs to get to the courtroom can be exorbitant and one day in court can cost a person upwards of $30,283.

J.P. Boyd , a British Columbia Family Law lawyer has an excellent website including a “legal fees guesstimator.” If one puts in $400/hr as their lawyer’s fees and they are preparing for one day in court, Mr. Boyd’s assumptions are:

1) It will probably take about 49 hours to prepare for and conduct the examinations for discovery.

2) It will probably take somewhere around 18 hours to prepare for and run the trial, and

3) Your lawyer’s fees will probably be about $26,800 plus taxes, for a rough total of $30,283.

So, it is quite obvious that couples going through separation and divorce should attempt to settle their differences outside the courtroom.
